Sagarmatha National Park was Nepal's first natural site inscribed by UNESCO, in 1979. It ranges from 2,845 meters up to the summit of Everest at 8,848 meters, and around 3,500 Sherpa people live in villages and seasonal settlements along the main trekking trails. Most visitors fly into Lukla and trek up the Khumbu valley toward Everest Base Camp over 1-2 weeks, acclimatizing as they go.
